UFO Script for
"The Psychobombs"

SYNOPSIS: Three average people become super-humans when “taken over” by the aliens from outer space and are used as instruments in an attempt to wreck S.H.A.D.O.  They are three very ordinary people - Linda Simmonds, a secretary; Clem Mason, a motorway construction manager: Daniel Clark, a bank clerk.  Yet they have incredible, superhuman powers of strength without their even realising it. All are completely unaware that they have been taken over by aliens from outer space who have landed on Earth in a U.F.O. which the S.H.A.D.O. Organisation cannot find. It is only when signals from the aliens penetrate their minds that their behaviour is out of the ordinary. Afterwards, they have no recollection of what they have done.  They are the instruments chosen to wreck S.H.A.D.O.

Ed Straker doesn’t even know of their existence when he receives an ultimatum, which has been found on him after he has been attacked in his car by Clark, who has asked for a lift home. It is a warning that unless S.H.A.D.O. ceases all operations, first the Fairfield Tracker Station will be destroyed; then Skydiver Three; then Commander Straker and S.H.A.D.O. Control.  Despite all precautions, the first part of the threat is successfully carried out by Clark, who uses his superhuman strength to break into the Tracker Station, then Mason overpowers S.H.A.D.O.’s Captain Lauritzen and takes over his identity, gets aboard Skydiver Three and blows it to smithereens.

Next on the list are Straker and S.H.A.D.O. Control, and information pieced together points towards Linda, who has already killed a policeman and her employer without knowing that she has done so. Is she to be the final instrument in wrecking S.H.A.D.O. ? If so, how can she be stopped?

Straker takes the gamble of his life, a gamble on the UFO being found in time . . .

STRAKER
This is Commander Straker. Colonel Lake around? Well, where's Colonel Foster? No, no. Don't bother. Spread it around
I'm on my way in, will you. I find it helps efficiency.

Whats the problem?

CLARK
I wonder if you you'd give me a lift.

STRAKER
Why, what's the matter?

CLARK
My car... Doesn't seem to want to start.

STRAKER
V/O Well, I, er...

CLARK
I live just a little way down this road, if you could, er...

STRAKER
Alright. Jump in.

CLARK
Thank you very much. I'm, er, sorry to trouble you like this.

STRAKER
Oh, forget it. It's no trouble.

CLARK
Oh, you're an American...

STRAKER
That's right. Boston.

CLARK
Oh. I find most Americans are, very mechanically minded...

STRAKER
Oh?

CLARK
I'm not I'm afraid. Well, take my car. It's probably just, er, the lead, or wire, or something like that.

STRAKER
Er, what is your line, Mister...

CLARK
Clark, Daniel Clark. That's what I am, a bank clerk. I pride myself on being a good judge. I'd say you were some kind
of, er, executive.

STRAKER
Yes, I guess you could say that.

CLARK
Oil?

STRAKER
Motion pictures.

CLARK
Oh, Films. Oh that must be a very exciting life. Oh well anywhere along here will be just fine. I live over there. Just beyond the wood.

STRAKER
Well, there we are, Mr.Clark.

CLARK
Er, thank you very much.

STRAKER
Don't mention it. No trouble at all.

CLARK
I... appreciate...

STRAKER
What's the matter?

RADIO OPERATOR
Commander Straker's car, sir.

FOSTER
Where?

RADIO OPERATOR
Three kilometers from junction 14.

COLONEL LAKE
How does it feel?

STRAKER
Like it's just been shaken by an angry orangutang.

JACKSON
Well I'm afraid you will live, Commander.

STRAKER
Thank you very much, Doctor.

V/O Ah, Paul, what have we got?

FOSTER
Daniel Frederick Clark, age 44, works in a bank. Married with two children.

STRAKER
Nothing else?

FOSTER
No criminal record. Not even a traffic indictment, nothing. A solid law abiding citizen. A Mister average. We'll find out more when we pick him up.

STRAKER
Mister average threw me across the car like a rubber doll.

JACKSON
There are certain psychiatric conditions that can impart tremendous physical strength for brief periods. Tensions... stresses... of one kind or another build up and... er, finally explode.

FOSTER
Maybe you should take a few days off.

STRAKER
No, I'm fine. How are the new interceptor pilots shaping up at Moonbase, Paul?

COL.LAKE
How soon should they be ready?

STRAKER
Well they should be ready in a month.

FOSTER
Month? Nearer six weeks.

STRAKER
Thank you, Lieutenant. Colonel Foster, I want you to read that.

FOSTER
What is it?

STRAKER
An ultimatum.

FOSTER
Notice is hereby given that unless the terms herewith are...

STRAKER
First the Fairfield Tracker Station and then Skydiver Three will be destroyed.

FOSTER
And then SHADO Control and Commander Straker.

STRAKER
Unless SHADO ceases all operation.

COL.LAKE
Surrender? Where'd you get it?

STRAKER
Daniel F. Clark must have slipped it into my coat.

FOSTER
These conditions - Moonbase to be evacutaed. All Skydivers to surface... If Clark did write this he knows a hell of a lot about our organisation.

STRAKER I want a security check on all Shado installations. Get me a line link to all Skydiver Captains.

OPERATIVE
Yes Sir.

STRAKER
Put Moonbase on Yellow alert.

RADIO OPERATOR
Yes sir.

STRAKER
While we're about it, we'll have a little security drill right here. Thirty minutes.

FOSTER
You're taking it seriously.

STRAKER
I knew an old police captain once, Paul. He used to get a hundred crank letters a week. The one he ignored was the one that killed him.
Get on to the Fairfield Commander, their first on the list.

FOSTER
Yes sir.

TRACKER STATION OFFICER
What is it?

GUARD
V/O Perimeter fence, sir, section 4.

TRACKER STATION OFFICER
Get someone out there.

GUARD
V/O Get some men out to the fence... that jeep over here.

Over there.

Stay where you are.

On the ground.

Move.

Right, on you feet. Up. Come on. Hands over your head. Head for the jeep. Move...

We've got him, sir. We're coming in now.

TRACKER STATION OFFICER
Has he been cleared by security control?

GUARD
Yes sir, we gave him the works, X-ray, everything. He's clear.

TRACKER STATION OFFICER
Right. Wait outside. What's your name?

CLARK
Clark. Daniel Clark. But I... I seem to be a little confused.

TRACKER STATION OFFICER
Well, Mr.Clark, you do realise you've entered a restricted area?

CLARK
No.

TRACKER STATION OFFICER
Are you trying to tell me you didn't see the notices?

CLARK
Notices? No.

TRACKER STATION OFFICER
Do you own a typewriter?

CLARK
No. No, I don't.

TRACKER STATION OFFICER
I see. Guard!

Lock him up somewhere, and get me a security line to Control.

CLARK
Listen.. I really can't remember...

GUARD
Just keep walking.

TRACKER STATION OFFICER V/O
Well, Mr. Clark, you do realise you've entered a restricted area.

CLARK V/O
No.

TRACKER STATION OFFICER V/O
Do you own a typewriter?

CLARK V/O
No. No, I don't.

TRACKER STATION OFFICER V/O
Right. Guard, lock him up somewhere. And get me a security line to Control.

FOSTER
Sixty four seconds later an explosive detonation force seventeen.

STRAKER
Well, Captain, you're the expert.

LAURITZEN
I have to admit I'm baffled. This man Clark is stripped, checked electronically, cleared on all counts. These recorded results show radiation check - negative. X-ray - negative. Bio-sensors - negative. And to produce a force seventeen detonation would take 4 lbs of our latest explosive.

FOSTER
Or two pints of nitro glycerine.

COLONEL LAKE
The eye of the explosion seemed to be centred on the main electrical switch panel.

LARITZEN
Yes, a 10,000 volt input. But if he had tried anything there all he would have done was to blow the main fuses or electricute himself. At worst, he may have started a fire.

COLONEL LAKE
Was there anything already on the base that he might have used?

LAURITZEN
No. No explosives of any kind, no nuclear material. Nothing. You know, in the right conditions you can make a bomb out of a bag of flour, but not a detonation of this magnitude.

STRAKER
Captain, I want you to go down to our Naval installation. I'm putting you in command of security on Skydiver three, the next target.

MASON
We'll need to take this section down another three metres.

LABOURER
We won't be able to get near it, sir, till the end of the week.

MASON
End of the week...? We're behind schedule already.

LABOURER
What?

MASON
I said we're behind schedule as it is. Look, what you'll have to do is... move some of the men.

LABOURER
Are you Okay, Mr.Mason?

TRUCK DRIVER
Get out the way...

V/O
Get out the way...

EXECUTIVE
...and I'll need the file on the cost estimates and a copy of that report as soon as it's typed.

LINDA
It should be ready this afternoon, sir. Oh, I made the reservations in Geneva.

EXECUTIVE
Good. Tickets?

LINDA
In your brief case, sir, with the travellers cheques and cash.

EXECUTIVE
Thank you. That seems to take care of everything. If you'll just finish that report, and get me those couple of calls...

LINDA
Yes sir.

EXECUTIVE V/O
And cancel all appointments for me on Friday... I'll speak to the accountant first.

LINDA
Excuse me sir, I must go.

EXECUTIVE
Are you alright?

LINDA
I have to leave.

EXECUTIVE
I don't understand, is anything wrong?

LINDA
I must go, at once.

EXECUTIVE
You don't feel well, come and sit down.

LINDA
No. No.

STRAKER
Skydiver three was due to sail tomorrow, but I've brought its departure time forward to 21.00 hours tonight.

LAURITZEN
Right, I'll be aboard.

STRAKER V/O
I've told the Captain to remain at sea until further orders.

LAURITZEN
That's a good idea, sir. Once we're mid ocean we should be safe enough.

STRAKER
Let's hope so.

LAURITZEN
Hey, what do you think you're doing?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

SKYDIVER NAVIGATOR
Commander Straker for you, sir.

SKYDIVER CAPTAIN
Right.

STRAKER V/O
I just want to check on your departure time, Captain.

SKYDIVER
CAPTAIN We'll make twenty one hundred hours alright, sir.

STRAKER
Have you searched the ship?

SKYDIVER CAPTAIN
Yes sir, we've been over her with electro-scanners, top to bottom.

STRAKER
Fine. Well, good luck, Captain.

FOSTER
Well, nothing more we can do except wait.

STRAKER
Oh, isn't there, Paul. I seem to recall an unlocated UFO. I want it found.

GUARD
Security.

V/O
Captain Lauritzen's here.

GUARD
We're expecting him. Captain Lauritzen's here.

Good evening, Captain. May I have your pass please sir. Thank you, sir. Can we check your case, please sir. Travelling light. Finger prints, please, Captain. Thank you, sir. Well, everything seems to be in order, Captain. Go right ahead, sir. They're expecting you on board.

Get me Skydiver.

SKYDIVER CAPTAIN
Skydiver.

GUARD
Security here, sir. We have an intruder.

SKYDIVER CAPTAIN
Is he armed?

GUARD V/O
No sir.

SKYDIVER CAPTAIN
Right. Sound a general alert.

SKYDIVER NAVIGATOR
This is an alert.

SKYDIVER CAPTAIN
Get me Commander Straker.

V/O Voice print identification. Request voice print identification. You have five seconds. Voice print negative.

STRAKER
Where is he now?

CAPTAIN
In the voice print trap.

STRAKER
Get that submarine out to sea.

SKYDIVER CAPTAIN
We'll be away in couple of minutes.

V/O Clear fore and aft, sir.

SKYDIVER CAPTAIN
Right. Sever ship to shore umbilicals.

V/O Yes sir. Sever ship to shore umbilicals.

SKYDIVER CAPTAIN
Clear the deck and secure hatch.

V/O Clear the deck. Yes sir. Hatch secure, sir.

GUARD
Let's go.

SKYDIVER CAPTAIN
Slow ahead.

SKYDIVER NAVIGATOR
Slow ahead.

GUARD
Check it.

2nd GUARD
He's gone.

GUARD
Must be aboard.

STRAKER
What!! How?

FOSTER
We don't know exactly. It seems he forced the security doors.

STRAKER
Get me Skydiver Three. How in blazes could one unarmed man cut his way through five centimeters of steel plate doors?

RADIO OPERATOR
Captain on the line, sir.

STRAKER
Captain, it's highly probable that you have a saboteur aboard.

CAPTAIN
Well if there is sir, he can only be up top. We can handle it.

STRAKER
Yes I'm sure you can, Captain. Now keep me informed.

CAPTAIN
Yes sir. Break out the small arms.

CREW MEMBER
Yes sir.

2nd CREW MEMBER
He's up there sir, on the conning tower.

STRAKER
Out of the question.

CAPTAIN
But sir, we could open the hatch and rush him.

STRAKER
I said NO, Captain.

V/O Have you reached the safe dive area?

CAPTAIN
Yes sir, just about.

STRAKER
V/O Then take her down.

CAPTAIN
Sir?

STRAKER
I said, submerge.

CAPTAIN
Commander, there's a man up there, one unarmed man...

STRAKER
Captain, I gave you a direct order.

CAPTAIN
Take her down.

CREW MEMBER
Dive, dive, dive.

V/O Blow one and two.

FOSTER
What a mess!

COLONEL LAKE
What did that... to his hands?

FOSTER
I don't know. Take a look around.

COLONEL LAKE V/O
Paul!

FOSTER
Clem Mason. 35. Construction Manager. Suddenly walked off the site yesterday afternoon. No record.

STRAKER
Another Mister Average. Doesn't add up. He killed Lauritzen, tries to get through the security net, is discovered, gets caught in the Voice Print Trap, and then gets out through tungsten steel doors.

COLONEL LAKE
It's also been established that he was unarmed and had nothing on his person.

STRAKER
Right. He gets aboard Skydiver Three. A ship that's been checked with all the sophisticated electronic devices we have, And yet... minutes later... it's blown out of the water.

COLONEL LAKE
And you said he was a Mister Average, but no normal man could have clawed his way out of those doors.

FOSTER
So he possessed, or was possessed by, some superhuman force.

STRAKER
Mmm... In place of superhuman... try alien.

COLONEL LAKE
And you... are next on the list, Commander.

STRAKER
More important, so is the Control Centre. Look, feed every scrap of information we have into the computer. Every fact, no matter how insignificant. Bend the programme, if necessary.

V/O 'Morning.'

LINDA
Hello.

FOSTER
Hey... take a look.

COLONEL LAKE
Yeah... that could be something. I'll check the details.

EXECUTIVE
V/O Come in.

LINDA
'Morning sir.

EXECUTIVE V/O
Miss Simmons, I didn't expect you.

LINDA
Didn't expect me... I want to make sure you catch that plane.

EXECUTIVE
We... we've been looking for you. I contacted your parents. Are you all right?

LINDA
Fine sir, why?

EXECUTIVE
Miss Simmons, leave all that. Yesterday afternoon, you...

LINDA
Yes sir?

EXECUTIVE V/O
I think I ought to call someone. A doctor... or...

LINDA
I wouldn't do that if I were you.

STRAKER V/O
Yes, that's right. Immediate.

FOSTER
We may have something.

COLONEL LAKE
Clark and Mason live in the same area.

FOSTER
The computer's come up with a police report that could fit.

COLONEL LAKE
Two nights ago a patrolman was brutally murdered and left on the side of the road. The police surgeon states that extraordinary almost superhuman strength was used to strangle him.

FOSTER
Now the time of death was put at twnty-two hundred hours. The patrol man reported in at twenty-one fifty-four. He was checking out a car apparently abandoned by the roadside.

COLONEL LAKE
We've checked the registration of that car and it belongs to a Miss Linda Simmons, who lives less than a mile from Mason. We have her address and we know where she works.

STRAKER
Its the best lead we've got so far. Let's go to work.

Got anything for a size A problem? De luxe version.

JACKSON
A stomach upset's easier to cure.

STRAKER
Yes, I'm sure it would be. Doctor, you said something the other day that stuck in my mind. You were talking about psychiatric conditions, how tensions, stresses, can build up until finally...

JACKSON
The subject explodes... mentally.

STRAKER
And physically.

JACKSON
I have a theory... I must warn you... its pretty wild.

STRAKER
Go ahead, Doctor. Try me.

JACKSON
A human body, muscles, brain, operates on a series of minute electrical charges, flowing around a complex of low voltage electrical circuits... the nervous system. Sometimes the electrical balance is disturbed.

STRAKER
Mental disorder.

JACKSON
Imagine a situation where for some reason the balance swings violently off centre. The body becomes super-charged... like a thundercloud before a storm. If such a charged being could exist it may be able to draw on all the primitive forces of the universe. Attract them to itself. Space, time, light, electrical potential, energy, they're all related. The result...

STRAKER
A human bomb.

JACKSON
A psychobomb...

FOSTER
Foster to Control. I've just checked Miss
Simmons apartment, she's not there.

OFFICE GUARD
Can I see your pass? Thank you.

COLONEL LAKE
Thank you. What happened?

POLICE OFFICER
A man's been killed.

COLONEL LAKE
Who did it.

POLICE OFFICER
We don't know yet, but whoever it was beat his head to a pulp.

FOSTER
Miss Simmons?

LINDA
Yes.

FOSTER
My name's Paul Foster.

LINDA
That looks very impressive.

FOSTER
A couple of nights ago you were driving back along route 107.

LINDA
Yes.

FOSTER
In this car.

LINDA
Yes. Oh... the police.

FOSTER
What about the police?

LINDA
A patrol man stopped me, I still don't know why.

FOSTER
I'd like to talk to you about that.

LINDA
Okay. Why not.

FOSTER
Let's take a walk.

COLONEL LAKE
Paul, it looks like Miss Simmons is it. She must be considered highly dangerous. Paul... V/O Come in Paul. Come in Colonel Foster.

LINDA
Well, Mister Foster, you wanted to talk to me.

FOSTER
Er, yes, um... How about some lunch.

STRAKER
Well the UFO's been in the earths atmosphere nearly forty eight hours. It must move soon before it starts to disintegrate. Let's concentrate the search area... here.

RADIO
Yes sir.

OPERATOR
Mobiles are moving in now, sir.

STRAKER
Good. What about Foster?

RADIO OPERATOR
Still can't contact him, sir.

FOSTER
Been in the office at all today?

LINDA
How'd you know I work in an office?

FOSTER
We have our methods.

LINDA
No, my boss is flying out to Geneva. Big man.

FOSTER
You don't like him?

LINDA
Yes, I think he's sweet. I always call him sir. Look at the fish. There's a big one. It's funny. I feel I've known you a long time.

FOSTER
Four hours.

STRAKER
Well?

RADIO OPERATOR
Search still negative, sir.

STRAKER
Keep them at it.

RADIO OPERATOR
Yes sir. To all sectors... V/O repeat, to all sectors. SHADO Mobiles one and two are proceeding to the search areas...

LINDA
Paul, why did you come to see me?

FOSTER
Maybe it was your personal magnetism.

LINDA
Seriously though, why all the questions?

FOSTER
Routine.

LINDA
Just routine?

FOSTER
There's nothing to worry about.

LINDA
But you do believe me? Don't you.
V/O Don't you. Don't you.

COLONEL LAKE
He's what? Foster is bringing Linda Simmons to the studio. Commander, did you hear what I said?

STRAKER
I heard.

COLONEL LAKE
But she is programmed to kill you.

STRAKER
Her target is also this control. I'd rather fight that situation on my own terms. When she arrives take her straight to room twenty-two.

COLONEL LAKE
But Commander...

STRAKER
That's all, Colonel.

RADIO OPERATOR
Still nothing sir.

STRAKER
This is Commander Straker to all mobiles and search aircraft. It is imperative, repeat imperative, that the Ufo be located as soon as possible.

FOSTER
Commander. I can't explain why I did it. I believe she's innocent, but to bring her back here...

STRAKER
Forget it, Paul. In the end it was my decision. Where is she now?

FOSTER
In twenty-two.

STRAKER
Who's with her?

FOSTER
Colonel Lake.

COLONEL LAKE
Now don't give me 'I don't know'. I want answers. Why did you kill your boss?

LINDA
I didn't... I didn't...

COLONEL LAKE
And the patrol man, why?

LINDA
I just don't understand what you're talking about.

COLONEL LAKE
You put your hands round his throat and you choked the life out of him.

LINDA
Stop it.

COLONEL LAKE
You pressed and pressed.

LINDA
Stop it, stop it, please.

COLONEL LAKE
Guard.

FOSTER
I still can't believe it.

STRAKER
That she could cave in a man's skull with her bare hands. A psychobomb with the ability to call on the potential of the entire universe. But what triggers is off?

RADIO OPERATOR
UFO lifting off.

GUARD
Stay back.

In Room 22.
That's far enough. I said that's far enough. One step more and I'll fire.

RADIO OPERATOR
Area four green. Groundradar have it on positive track.

PILOT V/O
Sky Four to Control. Have UFO on RADAR.

STRAKER
How far?

PILOT V/O
In range in three minutes.

STRAKER
Miss Simmons.

V/O You gave us an ultimatum.

LINDA
Surrender. Surrender SHADO.

STRAKER
You know that we can never do that.

LINDA
You have no alternative.

FOSTER
High voltage. That's the trigger.

STRAKER
The UFO that controls you has been destroyed.

V/O Miss Simmons.

If you touch those cables...

LINDA
Surrender. Ahhhhh... Er...

STRAKER
Emergency circuit.

FOSTER
Linda...

PILOT V/O
UFO destroyed. Returning to base.

COL.LAKE
How did you know Sky Four had got the UFO?

STRAKER
I didn't.
