UFO Script for
"Ordeal"

SYNOPSIS: Never share a sauna with a hangover! It's dangerous, even if you're as husky as an astronaut.

It's quite a party, as Colonel Paul Foster soon discovers - just as he discovers that the pretty Sylvia Graham is quite a girl. So it's not surprising that he should have a lulu of a hangover the next morning, and the situation is made worse by the fact that he has to report to the S.H.A.D.O. Research Centre for a check-over. The centre is, in fact, a lovely old country house and is a cover for the S.H.A.D.O. Health Farm where top personnel are kept in trim. Foster's night out of over-indulgence has not left him in the best of shape: strict physical routines are ordered.

He goes into the sauna bath and passes into a semi-conscious state in which he is only vaguely aware that startling things are happening. Unknown to him, a UFO has penetrated the S.H.A.D.O. defences to land in the area of the Centre - and Foster finds himself abducted by an alien.

Although Commander Straker pinpoints the UFO's position, he is too late to save Foster. Orders go out to destroy the alien craft, but Sky One pilot Gordon Maxwell, realising that Foster is aboard, deliberately refrains from shooting it down. But the craft is damaged, crashes on the lunar surface, and Paul Foster is rescued. Further danger lies ahead for Foster, however: he is wearing an alien space helmet. Clumsy removal would mean instant death because of the breathing liquid inside the helmet. Foster finds himself fighting for his life... only to find, as he struggles for consciousness, that he is still in the sauna bath . . .

ACT I

FADE IN

1 EXT. SKYSCRAPER FLATS. NIGHT. (LOCATION) 12 SECS

A TOWERING BLOCK OF FLATS. PAN SLOWLY UP TO THE PENTHOUSE TOP AND ZOOM IN.

CUT TO:

2 INT. FLAT. NIGHT. (STUDIO) 250 SECS

A PARTY IS IN FULL SWING. THE FLAT BELONGS TO SYLVIA GRAHAM, A YOUNG, ATTRACTIVE FASHION DESIGNER.
HI-FI MUSIC IS BLARING OUT, COUPLES DANCE, DRINK, SIT AROUND.

ON SYLVIA GRAHAM

THE NOISE IS TOO LOUD TO HEAR ANY OF THE CONVERSATION. BUT SYLVIA EXCUSES HERSELF FROM A COUPLE OF PEOPLE AND WALKS TO THE DOOR.

ON DOOR

MORE GUESTS CROWD IN. WE FEATURE JOHN KARLIN. THE NEW GUESTS BEGIN TO MINGLE WITH THE CROWD.

ON KARLIN

HE SMILES A HELLO TO SOMEONE HE KNOWS, GIVES A LONG LOOK AT A BEAUTIFUL GIRL AS SHE PASSES.

WIDER ANGLE

SYLVIA COMES OUT TO KARLIN WITH A DRINK. AS SHE HOLDS IT OUT TO HIM, SOMEONE ACCIDENTALLY KNOCKS IT FROM HER HAND AS THEY GO DANCING BY.

SYLVIA REACTS, TURNS BACK TOWARDS THE BAR, BUT KARLIN PUTS OUT A HAND AND STOPS HER. HE TURNS, TAKES UP THE NEAREST DRINK AND DRAINS THE GLASS. SYLVIA LAUGHS, THEY BEGIN TO DANCE.

WE NOW ESTABLISH A WILD PARTY - KARLIN SHOWS HE CAN PLAY AS HARD AS HE WORKS.

WE SEE HIM DANCING, DRINKING, INTERCUTTING THE AUTO-CHANGING RECORD PLAYER WHICH COULD BE OF UNUSUAL AND FUTURISTIC DESIGN.

WIDER ANGLE

A LIMBO IS IN PROGRESS. KARLIN AND SYLVIA ARE THE ONLY COUPLE LEFT IN IT.

THE STICK IS IMPOSSIBLY LOW, THE REST OF THE GUESTS STAND AROUND URGING THEM ON, CLAPPING THEIR HANDS IN TIME TO THE LIMBO BEAT.

ON KARLIN

SWEATING, A LITTLE DRUNK, EDGING FORWARD, ARCHED BACK TO GO UNDER THE STICK.

ON SYLVIA

ALSO ARCHED BACK, SHE LOSES HER BALANCE AND COLLAPSES ON THE FLOOR.

ON KARLIN

WORKING SLOWLY FORWARD, A FEW INCHES AT A TIME. EDGING UNDER THE STICK. THEN WITH A SUPREME EFFORT HE JERKS HIS HEAD UNDER. HE STANDS UP, THE GUESTS SHOUT AND APPLAUD. KARLIN SMILES BROADLY, HE HAS MADE IT.

WIDER ANGLE

THE MUSIC IS NOW SLOWER, COUPLES CREEP AROUND.

ON KARLIN

DANCING WITH A GIRL'S HEAD NESTLED INTO HIS SHOULDER. HIS EYES ARE CLOSED. HE OPENS THEM.

ON SYLVIA

WATCHING, A LITTLE JEALOUS PERHAPS.

POV SHOT

FROM KARLIN'S POV WE SEE A YOUNG MAN MAKING A CIGARETTE. HE LAUGHS AND WINKS AT A GIRL AT HIS SIDE.

ON KARLIN

WATCHING.

ON YOUNG MAN

HE WALKS OVER TOWARDS SYLVIA, OFFERS HER THE CIGARETTE. SYLVIA DOESN'T WANT IT. THE YOUNG MAN PERSISTS. HE IS MORE THAN A LITTLE DRUNK.

ON KARLIN

WATCHING.

TWO SHOT

SYLVIA AND THE YOUNG MAN.

SYLVIA FINALLY GIVES IN, TAKES THE CIGARETTE, THE YOUNG MAN LOOKS BACK TOWARDS HIS GIRL FRIEND AND SMILES KNOWINGLY, THEN LIGHTS THE CIGARETTE.

ON KARLIN

HE BREAKS THE CLINCH, KISSES THE GIRL LIGHTLY ON THE FOREHEAD AND MOVES AWAY.

WIDER ANGLE

KARLIN MOVES SWIFTLY ACROSS THE ROOM. HE SNATCHES THE CIGARETTE FROM SYLVIA'S MOUTH AND BREAKS IT. THEN TURNS TO THE YOUNG MAN.

SOMEONE FLICKS THE RECORD PLAYER, THE MUSIC CHANGES BACK TO THE BLARING NOISE OF A BEAT NUMBER.

TWO SHOT

KARLIN AND THE YOUNG MAN

WE DO NOT HEAR THE CONVERSATION. THE YOUNG MAN IS WHITE WITH ANGER. KARLIN IS RELAXED, CALM, TELLING HIM NOT TO BE A NAUGHTY BOY. THE YOUNG MAN WANTS TO FIGHT, KARLIN TURNS TO WALK AWAY. THE YOUNG MAN GRABS HIM AND PULLS HIM BACK.

THE YOUNG MAN SWINGS, KARLIN LAZILY DUCKS. HE SWINGS AGAIN - KARLIN SWAYS AWAY FROM THE PUNCH AND PUSHES THE YOUNG MAN BACK.

ON WINDOWS

THEY ARE PARTLY OPEN, IN FRONT OF THEM IS AN ARMCHAIR.

THE YOUNG MAN FALLS BACK INTO THE CHAIR.

KARLIN MOVES FORWARD, HOLDS OUT HIS HAND TO HELP HIM ONTO HIS FEET.

ON YOUNG MAN

KARLIN PULLS HIM UP ONTO HIS FEET, SMILING AT HIM. THE YOUNG MAN SEETHES. SUDDENLY HE SPITS INTO KARLIN'S FACE.

ON KARLIN

HE REACTS. FOR THE FIRST TIME WE SEE HE IS ANGRY. THE MUSIC STOPS.

HE GRABS THE YOUNG MAN, FORCING HIM OVER ON HIS BACK AGAINST THE ARMCHAIR AND HALF OUT OF THE WINDOW, WHICH IS OPEN TO SHOW A VIEW OF LONDON FROM HIGH UP.

ON YOUNG MAN

ROLLING HIS HEAD FROM SIDE TO SIDE IN HORROR.

POV SHOT

THE SHEER DROP, THE BLINKING LIGHTS OF OTHER BUILDINGS.

ON KARLIN

THE ROOM IS SILENT, KARLIN GRABS THE YOUNG MAN'S LEGS AND FLIPS HIM BACK OVER THE ARMCHAIR OUT OF THE WINDOW. HE SCREAMS IN TERROR.

WIDER ANGLE

THE GUESTS STAND IN STUNNED HORROR.

ON KARLIN

LOOKING AROUND THROUGH NARROW EYES.

KARLIN
Any more... troublemakers can go out the same way.

WIDER ANGLE

THE GUESTS STAND IN SILENCE, HARDLY ABLE TO BELIEVE WHAT HAS HAPPENED,

ON WINDOW

THE YOUNG MAN PULLS HIMSELF UP INTO SHOT. WE ANGLE TO SHOW THERE IS A SMALL BALCONY OUTSIDE THE WINDOW. HIS FACE IS WHITE WITH FEAR.

WIDER ANGLE

EVERYONE APPRECIATES THE JOKE. THE RECORD PLAYER STARTS UP AGAIN. KARLIN MOVES OVER TO SYLVIA AND THEY START TO DANCE. SHE LOOKS UP ADMIRINGLY AT HIS SMILING FACE.

SWAYING A LITTLE, LOOKING AROUND AT THE MESS, OBVIOUSLY STONED.

WE HEAR THE GOODNIGHTS OVER AS KARLIN MOVES A BIT UNSTEADILY TO THE WRECKAGE THAT WAS THE BAR.

WIDER ANGLE

SYLVIA COMES BACK INTO THE ROOM, LOOKS AROUND THEN SMILES AND MOVES OVER TO KARLIN.

TWO SHOT

KARLIN AND SYLVIA

SYLVIA
Help yourself to a drink.

KARLIN CONSIDERS.

KARLIN
Why not.

WITH AN EFFORT HE POURS HIMSELF A SUPER LARGE SCOTCH. HE TAKES A LARGE GULP.

HE THINKS A MOMENT THEN GIVES HIS SILLY DRUNKEN LAUGH. HE LOOKS AROUND.

POV SHOT

GOING A LITTLE OUT OF FOCUS.

ON KARLIN

HE DRAINS THE SCOTCH IN ONE GO, THEN PUTS HIS GLASS VERY CAREFULLY DOWN.

HE ARRANGES THE CUSHIONS SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY. THEN CHANGES THEM ROUND AGAIN - FINALLY HE IS SATISFIED AND STRETCHES OUT ON THE SOFA.

WIDER ANGLE

SYLVIA COMES BACK INTO THE ROOM. SHE HAS CHANGED INTO A VERY ATTRACTIVE DRESSING GOWN.

SHE WALKS OVER TO THE SOFA, KNEELS ON THE FLOOR AND BEGINS TO SET THE ALARM. SHE TAKES HER TIME.

KARLIN WATCHES HER, A SMILE TWITCHING ON HIS LIPS. SHE GLANCES UP AT HIM, SAYING A LOT WITH HER EYES.

SYLVIA PUTS THE ALARM CLOCK DOWN, LEANS FORWARD AND KISSES HIM LIGHTLY ON THE LIPS, THEN GETS UP AND MOVES AWAY.

ON SYLVIA

SHE MOVES TOWARDS THE BEDROOM, STOPS AND TURNS BACK TOWARDS KARLIN WHO IS NOW HIDDEN BY THE BACK OF THE SOFA.

SYLVIA
(inviting)
Are you sure you'll be... comfortable there?

SHE MOVES BACK AND LEANS OVER THE BACK OF THE SOFA.

POV SHOT

SHE WILL NEVER KNOW THE ANSWER. KARLIN IS FAST ASLEEP.

ON SYLVIA

SHE SMILES, GOES TO THE BEDROOM AND CLOSES THE DOOR.

SYLVIA (VO)
Who is it?

KARLIN
John Karlin... I just wanted to say goodbye.

KARLIN SMILES AT THE SOUNDS OF WAKING UP FROM INSIDE AND MOVES TOWARDS THE FRONT DOOR. THE BEDROOM DOOR OPENS. SYLVIA POKES HER HEAD AROUND IT - HOLDING THE DRESSING GOWN UP IN FRONT OF A SHEER BABY DOLL NIGHTIE.

SYLVIA
(sleepy, appealing)
John...

KARLIN TURNS, WALKS BACK AND KISSES HER. SYLVIA PURRS IN SATISFACTION.

SYLVIA
Bye, John...

KARLIN WALKS TOWARDS THE DOOR AND GOES OUT. SYLVIA MOVES INTO THE ROOM PULLING THE DRESSING GOWN AROUND HER, NOTICING THE ROOM HAS BEEN TIDIED.

SHE MOVES TO THE TABLE.

HE LOOKS UP AT A BLEEP - FLICKS A BUTTON ON HIS DESK AND THE DOOR SLIDES OPEN TO SHOW KARLIN.

DOCTOR
Come in Captain. Sit down.

HE CHECKS A FILE.

DOCTOR
Submarine Commander, eh?

Welcome aboard...

DOCTOR
Well, let's get down to details...

HE TAKES A FORM AND BEGINS TO FILL IT IN.

DOCTOR
This is all routine...

THE DOCTOR READS THE ROUTINE QUESTIONS FROM THE FORM.

...No? No.

DOCTOR
Shortage of breath... Dizzy spells.

HE LOOKS AT KARLIN, SMILES AND SHAKES HIS HEAD.

DOCTOR
Have you ever contracted Scarlet Fever, Mumps, Measles, Whooping Cough, German Measles, or Chicken Pox?

KARLIN TAKES OFF HIS GLASSES, RUBS HIS EYES.

KARLIN
I... er... had measles.

DOCTOR
Ah ha... how old were you?

KARLIN
(quietly)
Four... or maybe five.

DOCTOR
Pardon?

KARLIN
Four or five.

DOCTOR
Let's call it four and a half.

HE LOOKS DOWN THE FORM.

DOCTOR
Well, the rest of this is obvious enough... I'm sure you've never had Smallpox... eh?

HE STARTS TO LAUGH. KARLIN TRIES TO JOIN IN BUT FINDS IT HEAVY GOING. HE PASSES A HAND ACROSS HIS FOREHEAD.

DOCTOR
Getting plenty of sleep, Captain?

KARLIN REACTS.

KARLIN
Enough... most of the time.

KARLIN MEANS THE NIGHT BEFORE. THE DOCTOR TAKES IT THE WRONG WAY.

DOCTOR
I understand... It can't be easy on these long tours of duty.

THE DOCTOR PUTS THE FINAL TOUCHES TO THE FORM.

We have the U.F.O. termination fix. Southern England... grid reference 47 - 06.

STRAKER
Yes, the ground radar gave the same information.

DESICA
How badly was it damaged.

STRAKER
Hard to say. Sky 1 reported a probable hit, but it seemed to maintain course.

DESICA
What are the possible targets in the area?

STRAKER
Alec Freeman's checking with the computer. I want Moonbase maintained on full red alert. If that U.F.O. breaks cover and lifts off, I want it destroyed. Keep me informed.

DESICA
Roger and out.

ON STRAKER

HE TURNS TO AN OPERATOR

STRAKER
Are the mobiles moving in?

OPERATOR
Yes, sir.

ON DOORWAY

ALEC FREEMAN ENTERS AND WALKS TO STRAKER'S DESK. HE HANDS STRAKER A LIST, STRAKER QUICKLY GLANCES DOWN IT.

ON STRAKER

STRAKER
Nothing of real significance here.

TWO SHOT

FREEMAN
The Research Centre is less than 15 miles away.

STRAKER
I doubt if the Aliens would travel a billion miles to visit a glorified Health Farm, even if it is run by SHADO.

ON FREEMAN

FREEMAN
John Karlin checked in there this morning.

TWO SHOT

STRAKER
Karlin...

STRAKER TURNS TO AN OPERATOR

STRAKER
Get me Doctor Henderson at the Research Centre.

HE TURNS TO FREEMAN

STRAKER
If they get their hands on Karlin...

FREEMAN REALISES THE IMPLICATIONS.

FREEMAN
So much for you... so much for you and your odds.

HE LIGHTS HIS CIGARETTE, LOOKS AT STRAKER AND SNAPS THE LIGHTER SHUT - NOT GIVING HIM A LIGHT.

FREEMAN
A million to one eh... and he made it.

STRAKER SLOWLY CAREFULLY TAKES THE TABLE LIGHTER AND LIGHTS HIS CIGARETTE.

STRAKER
Has he?

HE LEANS FORWARD AND FLICKS AN INTERCOM.

STRAKER
Will you ask Doctor Shroeder to come in please.

FREEMAN, A LITTLE CONFUSED, LOOKS OVER TO THE DOORWAY AS IT OPENS AND DOCTOR SHROEDER COMES IN.

STRAKER
What's the position doctor?

SHROEDER
Well.. I've just had a long conversation with Moonbase. The position is a difficult one.

ON SHROEDER

SHROEDER
Captain Karlin's general physical condition is satisfactory, considering what he has just been through. But he is in an alien space suit... He is breathing liquid.

GROUP SHOT

FREEMAN APPEALS TO THE DOCTOR STUBBING HIS CIGARETTE

FREEMAN
We can make the transfer back to normal breathing.

THE DOCTOR DOESN'T REPLY

ON FREEMAN

FREEMAN
Come on now... you've done it before...

WIDER ANGLE

STRAKER
With Aliens.

SHROEDER
And none have survived more than a few hours.

ON SHROEDER

SHROEDER
It's an extremely hazardous operation. We have by no means perfected the technique.

WIDER ANGLE

SHROEDER
There's another difficulty... Here at SHADO H.Q. we have every facility… OnMoonbase the equipment is naturally more... crude. The chances are...

FREEMAN
Don't tell me.

ON SHROEDER

HE LIFTS AN EYEBROW

SHROEDER
I will be monitoring the operation by video link... if you'll excuse me.

SHROEDER TURNS, WALKS TO THE DOOR AND GOES OUT.

ON FREEMAN

AGAIN FRUSTRATED, WORRIED. HE STARTS TO PACE THE ROOM, PULLS OUT A PACKET AND TAKES A CIGARETTE.

Light?

CUT TO:

115 INT. SLEEP SPHERE. DAY. (STUDIO) 102 SECS

KARLIN LIES ON THE BED IN SPACE SUIT AND HELMET. THE MOONBASE MEDIC CHECKS OVER A TABLE OF INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT BY HIS SIDE. NOTHING VERY ELABORATE.

THE MEDIC IS A NERVOUS MAN, AND WE ACCENTUATE THIS FOLLOWING THE TREND FROM WHEN WE STARTED TO OVERPLAY.

HE DROPS AN INSTRUMENT. DESICA, PAULA AND TWO ASTRONAUTS LOOK AT HIM. HE DOESN'T EXACTLY INSPIRE CONFIDENCE.

MEDIC
Look... you're going to have to help me here.

DESICA AND PAULA SAY NOTHING

MEDIC
I mean this isn't like clipping toenails... I'm no surgeon you know.

DESICA
You're a doctor.

ON MEDIC

MEDIC
Sure... But I wanted to specialise... in gynecology.

ON PAULA AND DESICA

THEY LOOK AT EACH OTHER

DESICA LEANS FORWARD CLOSE TO KARLIN'S HELMET.

DESICA
John... you're gonna be alright... you're gonna be fine.

POV SHOT

FROM KARLIN'S POV. HE CANNOT HEAR THE WORDS. THE LIGHT ABOVE HIS HEAD BEGINS TO DANCE IN AND OUT OF FOCUS, OTHER COLOURS FLASH AND MERGE. THE MUSIC BUILDS.

ACT IV

FADE IN

116 INT. STRAKER'S UNDERGROUND OFFICE. (STUDIO) 80 SECS

STRAKER AND FREEMAN

FREEMAN IS STILL WORRIED

STRAKER
Listen Alec, John Karlin is in top physical shape.

A PAUSE

STRAKER
He's an expert skin-diver used to underwater pressures.

FREEMAN LOOKS AT STRAKER

FREEMAN
You think that background will help?

STRAKER
I'm no doctor, but I'd say it must be an advantage.

FREEMAN THINKS ABOUT IT.

FREEMAN
You could be right. Strong lungs… good respiratory system.

STRAKER
Sure... he'll pull through...

ON STRAKER

HE CONSIDERS A MOMENT

STRAKER
Then, we could give him... well... 24 hours.

ON FREEMAN

SUSPECTING STRAKER'S MOTIVES

FREEMAN
Give him 24 hours?

TWO SHOT

STRAKER
Let's make it 48... He should be ready by then.

FREEMAN
Ready for what?

STRAKER IS A LITTLE SURPRISED FREEMAN DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE MEANS.

STRAKER
Debriefing.

ON STRAKER

STRAKER
Don't you realise, Alec, Karlin's been inside a U.F.O. He could give us vital information... if not details... impressions, a sketch we can build on.

ON FREEMAN

FREEMAN
My God... That's your big worry… information... you just don't give a damn about what he's going through… you're the biggest, iciest...

OPERATOR (VO)
Commander Straker, Moonbase are ready.

TWO SHOT

STRAKER
Tell me later, Alec.

HE STRIDES TOWARDS THE DOORWAY LEAVING AN OPEN-MOUTHED FREEMAN.

CUT TO:

117 INT. SLEEP SPHERE. DAY. (STUDIO) 6 SECS

THE MEDIC, DESICA, PAULA AND THE TWO ASTRONAUTS ARE NOW READY TO BEGIN. NEAR THEM IS A VIDEO SCREEN ON WHICH DOCTOR SHROEDER CAN BE SEEN READY TO MONITOR THE OPERATION.

CUT TO:

118 INT. CONTROL ROOM. UNDERGROUND. (STUDIO) 47 SECS

SHROEDER SITS BEFORE A VIDEO SCREEN ON WHICH HE CAN SEE THE SLEEP SPHERE. FREEMAN AND STRAKER ARE AT HIS SIDE. WE INTERCUT BETWEEN THE CONTROL ROOM AND THE SLEEP SPHERE

MEDIC
We're all set here, sir.

HE HOLDS AN INSTRUMENT

SHROEDER
Take it easy, Grey. We've got to talk this thing out first.

MEDIC
Yes, sir...

HE DROPS THE INSTRUMENT WITH A LOUD CLATTER ONTO THE TABLE.

SHROEDER
Listen carefully. As I see it the main problem will be panic when the helmet is removed. Captain Karlin has been breathing liquid for some hours now, drugs will have been used to help his lungs adapt. When we attempt to revert to normal, the physical experience will be similar to drowning. Unless this moment is carefully controlled, the patient could go into convulsion and possibly choke. Let the Captain know the situation.

CUT TO:

119 INT. SLEEP SPHERE. (STUDIO) 68 SECS

ON KARLIN

IN THE HELMET, UNABLE TO HEAR WHAT IS GOING ON.

WIDER ANGLE

DESICA TAKES A CARD AND HOLDS IT UP IN FRONT OF THE HELMET.

POV SHOT

THROUGH THE VISOR WE READ THE CARD FROM KARLIN'S POV

"WE ARE GOING TO REMOVE YOUR HELMET"

ON KARLIN

HE DOES NOT REACT. ANOTHER CARD IS PLACED IN FRONT OF HIM.

THE CARD READS: "MAINTAIN YOUR RHYTHM OF BREATHING"

ON DESICA

HE TAKES UP A THIRD CARD, GLANCING AT PAULA.

POV SHOT

THE CARD IS BROUGHT IN FRONT OF THE HELMET

"WHATEVER HAPPENS - DO NOT PANIC"

ON KARLIN

HE REACTS, THE LAST MESSAGE HAS AN OMINOUS RING.

WIDE ANGLE

THE MEDIC DRAWS IN A DEEP BREATH.

MEDIC
Scalpel.

PAULA SLAPS A SCALPEL IN HIS HAND. THE MEDIC LEANS OVER KARLIN, A LONG PAUSE, HE CANNOT BRING HIMSELF TO BEGIN.

DESICA
Here, I'll do it.

DESICA TURNS AND PICKS UP A RIDICULOUSLY LARGE PAIR OF SCISSORS.

ON SCISSORS

POISED. THEN THEY MOVE FORWARD AND CUT A HOLE IN KARLIN'S SPACE SUIT TO REVEAL THE UPPER ARM.

RESUME SCENE

WIDER ANGLE

THE MEDIC LOOKS AT DESICA, DESICA NODS.

SHROEDER SPEAKS OVER THE VIDEO LINK.

SHROEDER
Is the resuscitator ready?

MEDIC
Yes, sir.

SHROEDER
All right, Colonel... begin.

DESICA LEANS FORWARD AND TAKES HOLD OF THE RING THAT CONNECTS THE HELMET TO THE SPACE SUIT AROUND KARLIN'S NECK. HE LOOKS AT KARLIN THROUGH THE HELMET.

ON KARLIN

HE GIVES A LITTLE NOD. HE IS READY FOR DESICA TO GO AHEAD.

ON DESICA

HE GRIPS THE RING AND SLOWLY BEGINS TO ROTATE IT. HE HEARS THE CLICK OF A LOCKING DEVICE.

ON KARLIN

HE CLOSES HIS EYES, READY FOR THE ORDEAL.

ON DESICA

HE MOVES THE RING A FRACTION FURTHER. AS HE CONTINUES TO ROTATE THE RING WE BUILD THE TENSION BY CUTTING AROUND THE FACES OF THE PEOPLE WATCHING, BOTH HERE AND IN THE CONTROL ROOM ON EARTH.

ON RING

A LITTLE LIQUID IS BEGINNING TO SEEP FROM THE JOINT.

ON DESICA

HE GLANCES UP TO THE ASTRONAUTS.

DESICA
Take hold of him.

HANDS LEAN IN AND TAKE HOLD OF KARLIN'S ARMS.

ON RING

AS IT SLOWLY ROTATES ANOTHER CLICK.

DESICA (VO)
Now.

HE TWISTS THE RING, LIQUID BEGINS TO POUR FROM THE HELMET.

ON KARLIN

AS THE LIQUID POURS FROM THE HELMET. KARLIN SPLUTTERS, COUGHS, FIGHTING FOR BREATH.

WIDER ANGLE

KARLIN THRASHES AROUND. THE TWO ASTRONAUTS HOLD HIS ARMS. THE MEDIC HOLDING HIS LEGS IS KICKED AWAY. DESICA WRENCHES THE HELMET OFF.

KARLIN
What happened...

DOCTOR HENDERSON
You passed out... for a few moments. In the sauna bath.

KARLIN
A few moments...

KAZAN
How do you feel, buddy boy?

KARLIN
A little confused...

ON DOCTOR

DOCTOR HENDERSON
Tell me, Captain, have you been burning the candle at both ends recently... drinking, for example?

GROUP SHOT

HE SITS UP ON THE MASSAGE TABLE AND SWINGS HIS LEGS TO THE EDGE.

KARLIN
Well, there was this party... er last night.

KAZAN GIVES A KNOWING LOOK.

DOCTOR
A sauna can be considered as a medical aid, but there's one golden rule. Never take one if you're feeling... under the weather, huh?

KARLIN
I should have told you.

DOCTOR
Well, there's nothing to worry about. You're in good shape, Captain. You'll be in even better shape when you leave here.

KAZAN GIVES KARLIN A FRIENDLY SLAP ON THE SHOULDER. THE DOCTOR WALKS TOWARDS THE DOOR, THEN TURNS BACK.

DOCTOR
Tomorrow we'll get down to some real work.

KAZAN LOOKS NONE TOO HAPPY AT THE THOUGHT.

CLOSING TITLES

UFO: "Ordeal"
Other information about this episode

● The original subject of the Alien abduction was to be Captain Peter Carlin - the party in the opening scene was to highlight actor Peter Gordeno’s dancing talents, but Peter had already left the series at this point, so the part was reassigned to Colonel Paul Foster.
● Also it was originally Lieutenant Maxwell (rather than Captain Waterman) who piloted Sky 1 when it was launched to destroy the UFO as it left Earth.
● On the end titles, Basil Moss’s character is credited as “Dr. Harris“ instead of Dr. Frazer, while Peter Burton’s character is captioned as “Perry” instead of Dr. Murray. Although it could be argued that the actors may not be portraying the same characters from 'Computer Affair', 'Exposed' and 'The Dalotek Affair', or that the characters full names are Harris Frazer and Perry Murray, or Frazer Harris and Murray Perry.
