The WE2990A Magnetic Tape Storage Units utilizes a 4K (4096 byte - upgradable to 64K) buffer to read and write at the singular density of either 1600 BPI (bytes per inch) or 3200 BPI (bytes per inch) (630/1260 B/cm) with full saturation in the Phase Encoded mode. Tapes conform to the industry/military wide IBM/ANSI (American National Standards Institute) format conventions for nine-track tapes, and can be translated into most other nine-track formats with the appropriate conversion routines.
The WE2990A can process tapes with or without IBM/ANSI labels with the WE2990A Utility Programs Set. Non-standard labels and special applications must be processed with user-programmed routines using the General I/O statements.

The new Westbrook Electronics 2990A nine track reel-to-reel Magnetic Tape Storage Unit is a reliable, high speed digital input/output peripheral used primarily for static and remote storage and also interfacing other digital computer systems to the Westbrook Electronics CPU’s (i.e. WE500 series with a WE Digital Drum Storage System). The online storage capacity - per tape - is approximately 35 megabytes (35 million bytes). The raw data transfer rate (head/buffer) is 120 KBS (120 kilobytes per second). Data transfer to the CPU is limited only by the speed of the I/O Controller interface and/or CPU. The WE2990A can be utilized with any WE200-500 computer system CPU which contains a minimum of 64K bytes of memory, and supports the General Input/Output instruction set.
